Reads & Reds- Fall 2020

San Antonio Leaders & Teachers is hosting a four session book study of The Courage to Teach: Exploring the Inner Landscape of a Teacher’s Life by Parker J. Palmer. 

As we read this book,we will renew heart, mind, and spirit through the exploration of the inner landscape of a teacher’s life. Amid schooling through a pandemic we will reconnect to one’s identity and integrity—identifying and honoring gifts and strengths, and acknowledging limits. We will create a context for careful listening and deep connection that also honors diversity in person and profession as we explore the connection between attending to the inner life of educators and the renewal of public education.

"Teaching, like any truly human activity, emerges from one's inwardness, for better or worse. As I teach, I project the condition of my soul onto my students, my subject, and our way to being together. The entanglements I experience in the classroom are often no more or less than the convolutions of my inner life. Viewed from this angle, teaching holds a mirror to the soul. If I am willing to look in that mirror, and not run from what I see, I have a chance to gain self- knowledge- and knowing myself is as a crucial to good teaching as knowing my students and my subject."

Reads & Reds will be faciliated by Jennifer Maestas, Veronica Valdovinos, Sukh Kaur and Jennifer Rosas, board members of SALT, San Antonio's first professional network for educators.

This book study will meet in-person AND via Zoom 5:30-7:30pm on Thursdays- September 17th, October 15th, November 19th and December 17th. 

Book pick-up and dinner drive-thru will be Sept 17th at Key Ideas from 4:00-6:00pm.

Zoom meeting will be at 6:30pm. Zoom Information will be sent via GroupMe upon registration.

We ask that you commit to all four sessions if you would like to participate. Space is limited so please RSVP to reserve your spot. Reads & Reds is FREE to SALT members and $45 for non-members (includes book and dinner/drinks at each session).
